Dos & Don'ts

The Dos and Don’ts of Flooring

In order to get the best experience and for all the benefits of the Floor Guard℠ Protection Plan, follow the Dos and Don’ts of floor care.

DO

  • When purchasing your floor, retain a minimum of three unused cartons of flooring material after installation, and keep it in a safe, dry place.
  • Keep your original receipt of purchase and Floor Guard℠ documents.
  • Keep a list of maintenance/cleaning products used on the floor.
  • Keep all records of service and inspection.
  • Sweep or vacuum regularly since built-up grit can damage the surface of the floor.
  • Remove spills promptly using a clean, soft cloth and Floor Guard℠ approved cleaning products.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, oil, and stains.
  • Place protective felt pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents.
  • Use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving heavy objects, furniture, or appliances.
  • Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels, as well as high heels, before walking on the floor.
  • Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically to reduce sun fading in certain areas.
  • Use area rugs in high-traffic and pivot points.
  • Maintain the proper relative humidity (between 37% and 48%) in your home.

DON’T

  • Wet mop or clean your floor with water or other acidic or abrasive products, or use floor cleaning machines, such as steamers.
  • Use oil soaps, liquid, or paste wax products or other household cleaners, which can complicate or prevent proper repairs, unless recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Use 2-to-1 cleaners with polish that may contain acrylic or urethane polish in attempt to restore gloss.
